Sula (Ross' Hole)

Back on the Lewis & Clark Trail! A large band of Salish were camped here when Chief Three Eagles saw the expedition approaching Sula on Sept 4 1805. It was reportedly the first time he'd seen men not wearing blankets. The chief gave orders for the best robes to be brought to Lewis & Clark to sit on, and one for each to use as a blanket. They had no meat to share, but gave the travelers an abundance of dried fruit. The tribe gave much more than food; they gave hugely: a dozen horses and other goods. Communication was difficult: their words went through five languages to be understood! These were the first white men seen on this river.  What extraordinary generosity! Would I give away horses to total strangers?
