Wiconi Powwow

The last Saturday of July we went to the annual Wiconi Powwow in Turner OR. Wiconi is a Lakota/Sioux word for LIFE; the group's aim is to support native American families to have a preferred future. The Powwow is the culminating activity of a family camp with lots of activities, talking circles, sweat lodge time and even a talent show.  The public is invited to the Powwow and we found the people there open and willing to share about their culture.   It was a colorful celebration filled with drums, singing, and dancing; some were dressed in full regalia while others were in casual jeans & shirt.  There was a dinner provided free of charge and prepared by a group of polynesians who flew in for the occasion and expressed their brotherhood as native peoples.  Eating the kalua pig (pulled pork) and ahi (tuna) made me miss Hawaii!  Vendors were selling various handicrafts and I even found an herbal remedy to rub on my sore shoulder.  There were solemn moments such as honoring a deceased veteran with a special dance, and whimsical ones like the couple's dance which was a contest to see which couple could dance the longest holding a potato between their heads.  All in all it was thoroughly enjoyable day to celebrate the beauty and variety of human culture, and honor the Creator who gives life to all.
